1. What we were trying to solve

Calls come in at 7 p.m. on a Tuesday. You're still on the lot, but you're in the middle of a deal. The phone rings. You can't answer. The caller doesn't leave a voicemail. The lead is gone.

That scenario happens multiple times a week at a small lot. Not because nobody cares. Because one person can't be in two places at once. A missed call at 7 p.m. from a buyer who was ready to talk is a missed deal. There's no polite way to put that.

4. Where it doesn't replace a person

For anything that involves negotiation, specific financing questions, or a buyer who has a complicated trade situation - the AI hands it off. It captures the context and moves on. Trying to make an AI close a deal is the wrong use of the technology.

The right use is: every call gets answered, every name and question gets logged, and every callback from the morning list has a context note attached. The dealer calls back knowing what the person wanted instead of calling cold.

That's not AI replacing a salesperson. That's AI making the salesperson's first call more effective.


5. The net result

After 30 days, the number we looked at was how many leads came through voice that we would have otherwise missed. The answer was enough to justify keeping it running. One turned deal from an after-hours call that the AI captured covers the cost for months.

The subtler benefit is that the lot doesn't go dark when you step away. Buyers who call at 8 p.m. get a response. Buyers who ask if a car is still available get an answer. The first impression isn't a voicemail that says "leave a message and we'll get back to you."
